The Best 90s Football Kits, Ranked
Modern kits are designed by algorithm. 90s kits were designed by someone who'd clearly had three espressos and a vision. Baggy cotton, wild prints, sponsors you'd never heard of. Here are the best 90s football kits, ranked by people who still own most of them.
8. Arsenal away, 1991 to 1993
The bruised banana. Yellow and black zigzags that looked like a television losing signal. Hated at the time, worshipped now. The perfect example of a 90s kit that was simply ahead of its time.
7. Mexico, France 98
An Aztec calendar printed across the whole shirt. Bold doesn't cover it. It's still one of the most recognisable World Cup shirts ever made, and it proved a national team shirt could be a piece of art.
6. England away, Euro 96
The grey shirt nobody asked for, worn in the semi final against Germany. It shouldn't have worked. It became a summer, a song and a heartbreak. Every fan of a certain age can tell you where they watched it.
5. Fiorentina, late 90s
Deep purple, a Nintendo logo across the chest and Batistuta inside it. Serie A style at its peak. If you watched Football Italia, you wanted this shirt.
4. Parma, the Parmalat years
Yellow and blue, a dairy company sponsor and a squad full of future legends. Parma were the cult club of the decade and the shirt was the uniform of every kid who supported a team from Channel 4.
3. Napoli, the Maradona years
Sky blue, Mars on the chest and Diego wearing it. The shirt of a city that believed. Some kits are just cloth. This one is a relic.
2. Italy, USA 94
Azzurri blue at its very best, worn by Baggio as he dragged Italy all the way to the final in Pasadena. Elegant, simple and tragic in the end. Pure Italian football.
1. West Germany, Italia 90
White, with that tricolour band zigzagging across the chest. The kit of the winners of the last pure World Cup. Clean, bold and instantly 1990. If you could only own one 90s football shirt, it's this one.
Why 90s kits still win
They had personality. They were baggy enough to wear down the pub. And they belonged to an era when a shirt meant a moment, not a marketing cycle. That's the feeling behind every Dynamo Lemons signing. See the latest retro football t-shirts, or relive Italia 90.
